WEDDING SONG

Marie Ponsot

Be between us in our making love

Wake us together burn burning fuse

Our two slept mysteries to truth. Holy dove

Strongly inform us lest we refuse

Each other all the joy we owe our making love.

Be close, disarm our kniving selfishness.

Unblind us to our true selves. Give us,

To give each other, our right clear images.

Strip from us what is, to our love’s early Eden, spurious.

Let each strip down, and burn, the other’s selfishness.

Put our double strength to your one school.

Teach our whole selves, holy dove,

The far free reach of your ecstatic rule.

Teach us all we can learn of your hard lesson, love;

Then rectify, enlarge us; put us back to school.

Be light and fire to us in our matching love.

Make bold use of us find build and bind us.

Blind us to what is in us not love.

Be quick beyond us for us holy dove.

The poet asks for the presence of a holy power symbolized by the "holy dove" to guide the couple in the process of loving honestly and consciously.

Perhaps some couples often hesitate to take the next step, even though loving each other brings them happiness. This poem calls for couples to open themselves up, let go of personal selfishness, and find the true version of themselves for the sake of sincere love. In that love, they are asked to build each other, learn from mistakes, and continue to improve themselves together.

With intense language and rich symbolism, this poem emphasizes that true love is not just about feelings, but also about struggle, growth, and sacrifice. It demands courage, honesty,
